President Donald Trump has claimed that Google’s search engine is biased and the results are rigged to feature overwhelmingly negative coverage of him and “others.” The president believes that Google suppresses conservative voices in a manner he called “very dangerous.” He then questioned whether Google’s actions were legal.

President Trump posted on Twitter: “Google search results for “Trump News” shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of results on “Trump News” are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous. Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!”

Google search is a product from the Alphabet Company, a publicly traded company. The search results are known to change throughout the day based on an algorithm never made public by the company. In March, Google announced plans to spend more than $300 million over the next three years to improve its search results. It is unclear what the administration could do about the perceived bias.

President Trump has regularly called out media outlets whose coverage he doesn’t agree with. He has previously called out Twitter for “shadow banning” prominent conservatives. “Shadow-banning” is a term used by Vice News to describe how certain Republicans weren’t coming up in search results. He has also criticized Facebook in the past for “always” being anti-Trump. Facebook has repeatedly denied that it suppresses right-wing sites from appearing prominently in its feed and “trending news” sidebar.
