The World Health Organization’s arm of research downgraded the classification it has for coffee from a possible carcinogen to there is not sufficient proof to show any link to cancer.

However, the IARC or International Agency for Research on Cancer announced as well in a published report on Wednesday that drinking beverages that are very hot of any type could possibly increase the risk of cancer, and it classified those as probably carcinogens for humans.

It cited in particular countries that included Iran, China and those located in South America where teas like bitter herbal infusion mate are drunk traditionally at temperatures that are extremely high or above 150 to 160 Fahrenheit, which are much hotter than the drinks normally served in cafes across Europe and North America.

Experts called together by IARC, which is based in Lyon, concluded that inadequate evidence existed to suggest coffee could be a cancer causer, according to a new letter that was published.

One of the experts convened said he did not know why coffee was ever in a higher category to begin with. He has studied possible links between cancer and coffee and the evidence that is available suggests that coffee does not increase the risk of cancer.

The IARC deputy head Dana Loomis said the organization’s program for classifying carcinogens started to look into a potential link after seeing rates of cancer of the esophagus that were unusually high in countries where the consumption is common of beverages that are extremely hot.

He added that even when beverages are at temps below 140 Fahrenheit, they can scald someone’s skin and that drinking them at temperatures that are even higher might be harmful.

Loomis said beverages that are very hot might cause thermal injury of the throat which could eventually lead to promoting tumor growth, but evidence to that was limited. He added that were was not sufficient evidence that suggested if eating foods that was very hot might be risky as well.

Other experts have said that people should stay focused on cancer’s leading causes including that of the esophagus and there were changes that were more important they could be making rather than waiting to drink cooler drinks.

Reducing the consumption of alcohol and quitting smoking are far more significant in lowering the risk of cancer than what temperature is the liquid one is consuming.

One expert said the risk of developing cancer by drinking beverages that were very hot was similar to that of eating vegetables that are pickled.
